Visual stories of science, nature, conservation and adventure

Published in 2013, The Symbol: Wall Lizards of Ibiza and Formentera is a beautiful coffee table book about the amazing Ibiza Wall Lizard (Podarcis pityusensis). Neil’s image of a Cuban Brown Anole (Anolis sagrei) adorned the cover of the journal Science on March 2, 2012. Inside this issue was a paper by Kolbe et al. about founder effects in experimental island populations of anoles: “Founder Effects Persist Despite Adaptive Differentiation: A Field Experiment with Lizards.” Read the paper here. See more images of anoles here.

In February 2011, Neil published an article about the natural history and conservation of Burrowing Owls (Athene cunicularia) in Birder’s World magazine: “Underground Owl.” The article featured burrowing owl photos by Neil and a beautiful opening spread by photographer Mac Stone. Neil’s image of a burrowing owl landed the cover. Read the article here.

In Spring 2011, Neil published an article about bird territoriality in Living Bird magazine: “There Goes the Neighborhood: Understanding Territoriality in Bird Communities.” The article focuses on interspecific territoriality – a situation in which two or more species treat one another as territorial rivals – using examples like hummingbirds, meadowlarks, and Marsh Wrens. Read the article here.

In Summer 2007, Neil published an article about the biology and conservation of the Greater Sage-Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) in Living Bird magazine: “King of the Western Sage: The Life and Plight of North America’s Largest Grouse.” The article focused on the sage-grouse in western Wyoming, and Dr. Gail Patricelli’s efforts to understand the sage-grouse’s spectacular courtship displays, as well as its precipitous decline in the West.
